Sukkot
The word Sukkot literally means “booths”, taking its name from the commandment to leave our comfortable homes and live in flimsy huts for seven days. The reason behind this holiday is to express our perfect faith in G-d to protect us, just as He protected the Jews during their forty year sojourn in the desert. This exciting holiday has us building Sukkot with palm fronds as a ceiling, and spending as much time as possible there, eating festive meals, sleeping and receiving friends and family there. It is said that the Ushpizin (Aramaic for guests) come to visit each and every one in their Sukkah, and so a certain decorum and elevated spiritual atmosphere must be maintained there. The Ushpizin, the great leaders of our people are Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon, Yosef and David. The four species are duly purchased before the holiday and used in during special services in the synagogue during the holiday and Chol Hamoed (interim days).
